Valentina felt grown-up, so she decided it was time to go to the bathroom by herself. Calmly, she walked to the bathroom, sat on the toilet, and relieved herself, proud of her accomplishment. What she didn’t notice was one small detail: she forgot to pull down her underwear.

When she finished, she called her mom to announce the good news.

“Mommy, I’m done!” Sara came into the bathroom and, upon seeing her, opened her eyes wide and shook her head.

“Oh, Valentina,” she said, “you should have pulled down your pants to be able to poop.”

Without harsh scolding, Sara helped her clean herself with toilet paper and then took her to the shower. There, she explained how to wash properly and also how to wash her pants, step by step, patiently.

“That way you learn to do things on your own,” she said, smiling, “little by little.”

Valentina listened attentively, a little embarrassed, but also proud. She knew she had made a mistake, but also that she was learning to be independent, like grown-ups.
