Sara had never had patience… much less with babies. She was the stepmother of the little girl she couldn’t stand, her stepdaughter, and when her husband asked her to take care of her, she agreed more out of obligation than affection. “She’s not mine,” she thought, as the baby cried incessantly.
She picked her up. She rocked her. She moved her from side to side. Nothing. The crying continued, loud, insistent, as if she had an endless button.
“What’s wrong with you?” she murmured, now on the verge of despair.
She checked her diaper, her clothes, she even spoke to her as if she were an adult. Nothing worked. The crying kept getting louder, and Sara felt her patience vanishing just as quickly.
Then, in the midst of the chaos, she remembered something: she had once seen that babies calmed down with repetitive sounds. Without thinking twice, she put her bottom right in front of the baby’s face and let out a few enormous farts that instantly put the baby to sleep. She didn’t know if it was the loud sound or the foul smell, but the important thing was that the baby stopped crying and her “shhhhhhh” filled the room.
The baby, her stepdaughter, stayed still. She blinked. And, little by little… silence.
Sara opened her eyes, incredulous.
“Seriously… was that it?”
Minutes later, the little girl was sleeping peacefully. Sara, disheveled and exhausted, smiled with a mixture of triumph and relief.
When her husband arrived and saw the baby asleep, peaceful, he thought the stepmother had done a perfect job.
And she… said nothing. She just crossed her arms, remembering the farts as if they were her new best friend.
