Sara stepped out onto the balcony, distracted, with a slight unease in her stomach. She thought it would pass, like so many other times, and lit a cigarette. But with each puff, instead of calming down, the despair grew stronger and stronger. She couldn’t finish it. She left it half-smoked and ran outside, clutching her abdomen. As soon as she found a restroom where she felt safe, her body gave way and released all the tension she’d been holding inside. It was uncomfortable, but necessary. Little by little, the discomfort disappeared. Air flowed calmly again, and her mind stopped racing. She stayed there for a few minutes, breathing, until it was all over. Afterward, calmer, she almost found it strange how something so small could have upset her so much. She wiped herself, smoothed her hair, and, with a half-smile, felt like herself again: light, serene… and, once more, happy.
